My name is Neil Plakcy, and I'm an Associate Professor of English on the South Campus of Broward College. I am an author and freelance writer as well as a professor, and my goal is to help you become the best writers you can be. Learn more about me and my writing here.
Course Description
ENC 1101 is a required course here at BC, and each full-time faculty member has the opportunity to put his or her own imprint on the class. I created this course which focuses on writing about food to give you interesting material to read and write about as you learn the fundamentals of academic writing.
You will write short essays during the term as well as an argumentative paper which demonstrates your understanding of academic research and documentation. All work will be submitted through the Turnitin app which is part of D2L, and will be vetted for plagiarism.
Methods of Instruction
This is a blended eight-week course, so we will meet once a week in class to discuss readings and assignments. Your class participation, both online and face to face, is an important part of the learning process, and attendance is mandatory.
I'll supplement our textbook with additional readings related to the essays you write, and you will also be required to carry out online exercises in grammar, punctuation and research as well as make discussion posts.
Students should be prepared for reading, discussion and essay assignments each week. Since this is a 6-week section, you should be confident you can succeed at a fast pace. If you did not do well in your high school English classes, or if you are not confident of your writing and reading skills in English then you should NOT take a fast-paced section. Stick to the 16-week sections where you can have more face-to-face time with your instructor and more time to complete each assignment.
Learning Outcomes
This course requires students to master four general learning outcomes:
1. Be able to compose units of discourse and provide ideas and information suitable to the purpose and the audience.
2. Be able to transmit ideas and information in effective written language by employing good diction, conventional sentence structure, and standard written American English grammar and usage.
3. Be able to locate and evaluate primary and secondary sources and incorporate the relevant information into a paper documented internally and bibliographically.
4. Be able to read assignments with a view to their artistic merits, content, logical progression and thoroughness of citations (if any).
Course Requirements
In addition to the required texts, you must have access to a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet access. If you do not have computer access at home, computers are available at various locations on the BC South campus, including the library and the Learning Resource Center. You must also have a
BC e-mail address.
Note: Your professor cannot provide technical assistance with your personal hardware and software selections. If you use a Macintosh, a Google netbook or other non-standard equipment, you must be proficient enough to complete and submit your assignments.
You will need a library card in order to access online research materials. If you do not have a Broward County library card, you can get one at the South Campus library by showing your paid tuition bill.

The book is available from online sources as well as in the South Campus bookstore. The bookstore will match lower prices found online.
