Welcome to ENC 1102: Composition II

ATTENTION: This is a Session 3 (6/27 - 8/7/2018) blended course which meets on Tuesdays from 10:00 - 11:50 AM in 69-101. Attendance is mandatory.
This section will cover all the material of a 16-week term in 6
weeks. If you did not do well in high school English classes, or if you
are not confident of your writing and reading skills in English then you should
NOT take a fast-paced section.
You will have access to the online portion of the course on the first day of the semester at 8:00 AM. My name is Neil Plakcy, and I'm an Associate Professor of English on the South Campus of Broward College. ENC1102 is an advanced course that builds upon and goes beyond what you learned in ENC1101. The skills that were developed in ENC1101 will be reinforced in this class. This is a very demanding course that requires critical reading and thinking skills. This section will explore genre fiction -- mystery, romance, science fiction, and so on -- as the basis for the development of academic-quality writing, including a documented research paper. Readings provided within the D2L course will provide topics for the discussion boards and quizzes. Students must pass either ENC1102 or ENC2210 to fulfill Area 1B general education requirements for the AA degree.
You will be assigned readings from the text as well as from materials provided online. You will read these selections and make discussion posts regarding them. I will supplement the materials with HTML lectures and quizzes. You will also write and submit papers. Your class participation is an important part of the learning process, responding to readings and asking questions.
Students should be prepared for reading, discussion and essay assignments each week. Since this is a 6-week section, you should be confident you can succeed at a fast pace. If you did not do well in your high school English classes, or if you are not confident of your writing and reading skills in English then you should NOT take a fast-paced section. Stick to the 16-week sections where you can have more face-to-face time with your instructor and more time to complete each assignment.

Successful completion of ENC 1101
You must have access to a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet access. If you do not have computer access at home, computers are available at various locations on the BC South Campus, including the library and the Learning Resource Center.
Note: Your professor cannot provide technical assistance with your personal hardware and software selections. If you use a Macintosh, a Google netbook or other non-standard equipment, you must be proficient enough to complete and submit your assignments.
You also must have a BC e-mail address.

These books will be available at the South Campus Bookstore; you can also purchase them anywhere online.
How to Register for this Course
Register for this course through your myBC website. Students must pay for the course before they will be able to log into the course.

How to Access this Course once you are Enrolled
The login date will be the first day of the session in which the course is scheduled. The only people who will be permitted to login are those students who have registered and paid for the course. There may be a delay of up to 24 hours from when a student registers and pays before D2L login is activated.
Obtain BC email user ID and PIN code before attempting to login to D2L.
At BC email address site, click on "ID Lookup", then enter your Student# (or INTL Student ID#) and PIN code (2 digit birth month and 2 digit year). Write down your email ID (not the @mail.broward.edu part), which is your D2L User Name.
Your D2L User Name is the same as your BC email ID.
Your D2L password is the same as your BC email PIN code.
